Learning how to burp your newborn is extremely important, because you can never underestimate the power of a good burp. Babies when they're younger drink a lot of air when they're drinking, when they're crying, and that air gets trapped in their stomach. The only way to get it out is to teach them to burp.

I'm going to show you a couple of different ways you can burp a baby. The first one is to put your baby resting on your shoulder, supporting the head and neck, making sure that the airways are clear, and obviously patting their back. Now, some parents get nervous and do a very gentle pat. You can actually be a bit more forceful. You don't want to bang them, but you want to give them a good pat to help them really get the air out of their stomach. You can start lower and then move up.

Another way for you to burp them is to hold them underneath their chin with a really good grasp of supporting their head and neck and tapping them on the back. Tap, tap, tap, as long as it takes to produce a burp.

Another way is the football hold, holding them on your arm, and, again, tapping their back making specially sure they're supported underneath their chin.

Some people also put babies over their knee, laying the baby on the knees, and making sure again that the chin is supported, and tapping, tapping, tapping.

It may take one, two, three, even four burps until the baby feels comfortable. Common times to burp a baby are often after a meal, in the middle of a meal. If they're on a long bumpy car ride or a bumpy stroller ride they bump and down and get a lot of air trapped in their stomach.

If they're crying and you can't figure out why I always tell people, pick up a baby, give them a burp. It may be a simple solution to a crying fit, and something as simple as a burp may make your day a whole lot better.
