Today’s video will discuss why space is black? When we look up at the night sky, or marvel at the images of the universe online, we come across the same thing: inky, black space space, stars, planets or spacecraft. But why is it dark? Why is the space colourless, unlike the blue midday sky on earth?

A major reason that the deep space appears to be dark is because space is an almost complete vacuum. Remember that the earth's atmosphere is blue because the molecules that make up the atmosphere, including nitrogen and oxygen, transmit a lot of visible light in blue and violet wavelengths from the sun in all directions. However, in the absence of matter, light travels in a straight line from its source to the receiver. Because space is such a near-perfect vacuum- meaning it has very few particles - there is nothing in the space between the stars and the planets to distribute light to our eyes. And apart from the light that reaches the eyes, all they see is dark.
