Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the Ancient Civilizations continues with an episode on the ancient Greek historians. In this video, we explore the great historians of Ancient Greece and how their works shaped our understanding of the past. From Herodotus, the “Father of History,” to Thucydides’ detailed account of the Peloponnesian War, each thinker brought a unique approach to the recording of history. We then examine Xenophon, the soldier-scholar influenced by Socratic thought and his admiration for Sparta, before turning to Polybius, who offered an analytical perspective on Rome’s rise to power. Diodorus Siculus provides us with a vast historical library, while Plutarch’s Parallel Lives shaped the art of biography, blending philosophy with moral lessons. Finally, we look at Arrian’s celebrated Anabasis of Alexander, our most complete source on the conquests of Alexander the Great. This journey through Greek historiography highlights not only the methodologies of these historians but also their cultural and political biases.
