Toffee Squares
1 c salted butter (2 sticks), softened
1 c brown sugar, packed
1 tsp vanilla
2 c all-purpose flour
1 Hershey’s milk chocolate bar (5–6 oz), broken into pieces
Chopped walnuts or pecans (optional – half plain, half nuts is perfect)
Lightly grease 13 x 10 in sheet cake, jelly roll pan or cookie sheet (any pan will do), toss a bit of flour to lightly coat the greased surface. Or use parchment paper to do without greasing the sheet.
Mix butter, brown sugar and vanilla until well blended, be sure to get those brown sugar lumps flattened and mixed in. Gradually add flour into butter mixture. Now place the dough onto a sheet of parchment paper on your pan. You’re going to flatten and shape into a rectangle. Use a butter knife to tighten the edges (this is important to minimize loose ends). Place in refrigerator to cool for about 30 mins or more if you have time, if not its okay too. Chilling the dough helps it keep more to its form. Next, bake between 325* and 350*, ovens vary. I bake mine at 325* for about 18 minutes or so. Once removed from oven, immediately place broken up chocolate bar all over the baked dough. Once the chocolate begins to melt (shiny and liquid looking) then take a spoon using the backside gently spread the chocolate bar over the top. Its okay if it pulls some dough up, if it does use a lighter hand and pull the chocolate from another area then go over any areas that were missed. Now you can sprinkle chopped walnuts or chopped pecans on top if you like. Sometimes I do one half side plain and the other half with nuts. Cut into small bite sized squares.
Tips: Cut a small sliver off the sides by dragging butter knife along edge but not necessary. Perfect way to taste test your scraps😉Plate when cooled so the chocolate does not stick to anything.
