Kamrunag is a revered pilgrimage site in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, known for its sacred lake and an ancient temple dedicated to Dev Kamrunag, the deity of rain. The location, situated at an altitude of 3,334 meters (10,938 ft), offers panoramic views of the Dhauladhar Range and the Balh Valley.
Key Features and Beliefs
Dev Kamrunag: The deity is also known as "Bada Dev" and is considered the king Yaksha from the Mahabharata, worshipped by the Pandavas. Devotees offer prayers for good rainfall, and a major fair is held every year in June, where the deity is believed to manifest.
The Mysterious Lake: The temple sits on the banks of a natural lake where devotees, upon the fulfillment of their wishes, traditionally offer gold, silver, and other coins by immersing them in the water. The lake is thus believed to hold an immense, unquantified treasure at its bottom, leading to its mysterious reputation.
Natural Beauty: The temple and lake are surrounded by thick forests of deodar trees, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board has also recognized the area for its rich flora and fauna.
Visiting Kamrunag
Trek: There is no direct road access to the temple and lake. The primary way to reach the site is via a steep 6 km trek (approx. 3-4 hours) from the village of Rohanda.
Getting to Rohanda: Rohanda is accessible by road from major cities in Himachal Pradesh. The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (Kullu), about 104 km away, and the nearest major rail link is at Joginder Nagar.
Best Time to Visit: The site is accessible throughout the year, but the best time for the grand fair is in June. The temple is generally closed during the winter months (December to March) due to heavy snowfall, and caution is advised during the monsoon season (July and August) due to potential landslides.
