Brown Beans recipe to Comfort the Soul— My Surinamese comfort food // Samantha Pollack

Whenever I think of brown beans, this memory comes to mind. I think I was seven years old, living in Suriname. My auntie (father’s side) was on vacation in Suriname and wanted my sister and I to spend the holiday with her. She couldn’t pick us up where we lived (country side), so we had to go to the city. She would pick is us up at our uncle (mother’s side). My sister and I got there on time and waited on my auntie for the longest. It was mid-week so everybody was at work.

As we arrived at our uncle he asked if we wanted to come inside? Because he had to run some errands and will not be at home for a while. We told him no, because my auntie would be here in a few minutes. We sat on the wooden stairs outside the house— because auntie would be here in a few minutes.. Mennn.. we’ve waited and waited and waited.. After a few hours my uncle came back and saw us sitting on the same spot he saw us earlier. He was in shock and mad. Asked us what we have eaten? He said don’t worry I will make brown beans. Mind you brown beans in Suriname is a festive/Sunday kind of food. As a little girl I would eat brown beans on a birthday or as I said (a special) Sunday comfort food. My uncle made the brown beans. Just of the stove - hot - served with rice - also hot. As we were blowing our food and took probably 2 bites from our plates, my auntie arrived.. I was so mad.. because the brown beans with rice was so nice! The perfect amount of spice - perfect amount of sweetness.. My uncle didn’t had any Tupperware of that sort, so we couldn’t take away. Our auntie did buy us KFC on the way— so we were happy, still lol. But the brown beans with rice.. I will never forget that.
