Maa Ghanteswari Temple, Sambalpur
Maa Ghanteswari Temple is one of the holiest and most beautiful temples in Sambalpur. The name “Ghanteswari” itself means – a place filled with bells (Ghanti). Devotees offer bells to Maa after the fulfillment of their wishes.Every day thousands of devotees come here from Sambalpur and different parts of Odisha. This spot is also called the “Heart of Chipilima”, a popular picnic spot. The specialty of the temple is the unique sight of thousands of bells hanging all around. The temple is located about 33 km south–west of Sambalpur, on the banks of the mighty river Mahanadi.⛵ Role in Navigation (in the past)
In earlier days, Maa Ghanteswari played a very important role for boatmen and navigators. The temple is often compared to a “lighthouse without light”. Why? Because in ancient times, big bells were installed here. With the strong wind, the bells created a loud and echoing sound, warning the boatmen about the dangerous whirlpools and currents in this area.
