In this teaching on 1 Corinthians 14:26-40, Pastor Tyler Warner and Calvary Chapel Trussville reconsider what our gatherings as believers should truly look like. At its heart, this passage reveals a stunning truth: when we come together, each person has something vital to contribute—whether a hymn, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. This isn't about one person performing while everyone else spectates; it's about the Holy Spirit manifesting through every member of the body. The central message is both liberating and demanding: Christianity is a participation sport, and we desperately need what God wants to do through each other. The passage from Acts 13 beautifully illustrates this—diverse people gathering, worshiping, fasting, and waiting until the Holy Spirit spoke and directed them to send out Paul and Barnabas. This is the model: prayer, worship, prophetic activity, testing what is said, and then action. Yet Paul's instructions remind us that spiritual freedom doesn't mean chaos. Everything must be done for building up, decently and in order. Speaking in tongues requires interpretation. Prophecies must be weighed. We can control ourselves even when filled with the Spirit. The challenge before us is to pursue both the power and the order—to earnestly desire spiritual gifts while maintaining the structure that allows everyone to be edified. Are we creating space for the Holy Spirit to move through ordinary believers, or have we settled for predictable, safe gatherings where God's surprises are unwelcome?
