The Main Central Road (MC Road) is one of Kerala’s most significant state highways, officially designated as **State Highway 1 (SH 1)**. Stretching from **Angamaly in Ernakulam district to Thiruvananthapuram**, the road covers about **240 kilometers**, running almost parallel to the older NH 66 along the western coast. It serves as a major north–south arterial route through the central parts of the state, connecting key towns such as Muvattupuzha, Kottayam, Changanassery, Thiruvalla, Chengannur, Adoor, and Kottarakkara. The road plays a crucial role in linking central Kerala’s midland regions with the capital city.
Built during the early 20th century, much of the MC Road traces its origins to the **Travancore kingdom’s transportation network**, developed under the rule of Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma and Diwan C. P. Ramaswami Iyer. Its construction aimed to provide a faster interior route for trade, administration, and movement of goods, avoiding the coastal terrain. Over the decades, it has evolved into one of the busiest state highways, facilitating both commercial and passenger traffic.
Today, MC Road remains vital for Kerala’s transport infrastructure, handling heavy inter-district movement across the state’s central belt. The Kerala Public Works Department has been implementing widening and improvement projects to upgrade sections into four lanes, especially around towns where traffic congestion is common. The road’s route through hilly midlands, rubber plantations, and densely populated areas makes it both scenic and strategically important for regional connectivity and development.
