Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 15 in C Major, D. 840 “Reliquie”
Nicknamed “Relic”, this work is one of Schubert’s unfinished masterpieces. Although it was composed in 1825, only the first and second movementswere fully completed, while the third and fourth movementsremain in draft form.
The exact reason why the work was left unfinished is unknown, but it is generally believed to have been due to other compositional commitments or health-related issuesat the time.
When the first edition was published in 1861, the publisher gave it the nickname “Relic”, meaning a posthumous work. However, it was not Schubert’s final composition; rather, the title was intended to emphasize that it is one of his last sonatas, not his very last work.

The second movement is lyrical and richly melodic, creating a sweet yet gently wistful atmosphere, and is especially renowned for its beautiful melody reminiscent of Schubert’s song-like (lieder) style.
