For World Bonobo Day, which some celebrate as Valentine's Day, let's take a longer look at the leisurely, languid life of the Nkokoalongo community of #bonobos in the verdant #rainforest of Kokolopori, DR Congo. After minutes of meticulous mutual grooming between mother and presumed father, their bored infant, Tresor, finally gets some attention by clambering between them. Then, voices off to the left cause mild concern and Mum gathers up Tresor, ready to flee if necessary... but the sounds are just local people who work with the Bonobo Conservation Initiative to protect these wonderful apes and their forest, so they soon settle down for more peaceful grooming.
Later, we take to the trees - me to get a better angle (primates silhouetted against the sky are not easily filmed), the bonobos to feed high in the canopy, leaving me envious of their acrobatic agility, strength and opposable big toes!
