This video tells the harrowing story of Elizabeth Frances Noble, a woman whose life in the market town of Beverley shifted rapidly from Victorian respectability to a crime that shocked the county. For over two decades, Elizabeth lived firmly within the "aristocracy of labor," the wife of a skilled joiner and a mother who prioritized her children's education. But following the death of her husband in 1879, the security of her household collapsed.

We follow Elizabeth’s precipitous descent from a stable matriarch to a fixture at the Sun Inn dramshop. In the space of just five months, she dismantled her family’s future, consuming the wages her eldest son earned while her home on Friar Lane fell into squalor. Her neglect was not passive but fatalistic; when challenged by neighbors about the condition of her seven-year-old son, Harry, she offered a chilling explanation that would later haunt the courtroom.

Through parish registers, census returns, newspaper reports, and prison documents we reconstruct the grim timeline of the winter of 1880. We see how the Victorian legal system responded to a mother who had abdicated her duty, moving swiftly from the Coroner’s Inquest to the York Assizes.
