On this episode of the Art Institute Essentials Tour, take a closer look at an extraordinary celadon vase made during Korea's Goryeo dynasty and titled "Vase (Maebyong) with Clouds, Flying Cranes, and Children amid Bamboo."
Celadon or green-glazed stoneware is one of the greatest achievements of Korea’s Goryeo dynasty (918–1392). This jade-green vase is an exceptional example of the medium and of a complex inlay design technique called "sanggam," which was used to create the motifs visible on the vase's surface. During the Goryeo dynasty, royals and aristocrats lived a very elegant lifestyle, and often decorated their homes with objects featuring motifs such as bamboo that carried specific meanings and represented virtues.
