COLORED PENCILS Prismacolor vs. AmazonBasics – Color Laydown, Price & Availability

As a part of a new series, we wanted to check out some product options for something we use daily. This time colored pencils and in particular Prismacolor vs. AmazonBasics to see how they compare in color laydown, price & availability. The availability is what prompted us to start looking around and well let's say we were more than pleasantly surprised!

Prismacolor Premier pencils overall have a higher pigment content as evidenced by the more intense color in most of the samples. Color selection within each set was comparable with AmazonBasics having a neutral gray and Prismacolors having one more blue and green hue. Colorability differences or ease of laying down color is imperceptible--if you didn’t know which pencil was which, you couldn’t differentiate one from the other. Where problems arise is in the availability of single pencil replacements because AmazonBasics only comes in a set. Prismacolor pencils are more expensive than AmazonBasics. Hope this helps those of you who are new to colored pencils and veteran users, try out AmazonBasics—they are a viable alternative.
