I got this vintage buffet for free from Facebook Marketplace. . The owner loved it so much and was thrilled to know I planned to give it a new life. She originally found it on the streets of Brussels and kept it in her home for 25 years.

Though I don’t know the exact origins of this piece, I’ve done some research and made an educated guess. I believe it’s a 1950s 'Mado-style' buffet—'Mado' stands for Maison Moderne, or 'Modern House' in French. This style was popular in France and Belgium in the 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, it’s missing the top portion, which is typically part of a complete buffet in this style.

The restoration process wasn’t without its challenges. I removed more layers of paint from this piece than any other I’ve worked on, only to find that underneath, the wood wasn’t pristine. Instead, there were cracks, stains, and even layers of plywood showing through.

Throughout this project, I faced moments of frustration and disappointment because I couldn’t restore it the way I initially envisioned. However, I pressed on, taking things step by step, and decided to honor the buffet’s history rather than hide it. I was inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, which sees flaws as features to embrace, not conceal. So, I let my creativity flow and came up with a unique design for this buffet. At this point, can I still call it a “restoration,” or is it more of a creative re-interpretation?

In the end, the piece isn’t restored perfectly, but that’s okay. Restoration often takes you on an unexpected journey, no matter how much you plan. All I can do is my best to make it better than it was before.
