In our new house the shower surround was old, yellow and gross. It even had a hole in it. The shower water valve didn't work right, and the cold water valve was backwards. When you turned on the shower, the valve wouldn't close all the way and half the water still came out of the tub faucet, so we would run out of hot water very fast (7-8 minutes fast). I installed a new surround and re-piped and plumbed the entire shower, now its fresh and clean, and a hot shower lasts for 30-40 minutes.
