I viewed this video as an opportunity to shoot a better video than my first two. My goal was to shoot from a left-side spot so my angle would cover the whole band. I wanted to be closer to Marissa so I could shoot her guitar playing, which I felt people needed to see. Her reputation as a virtuoso on the instrument preceded her and I wanted video proof of her prowess.

The National stage had two hanging speaker arrays flanking both sides of the stage. The floor speakers behind the monitors facing the audience was new to me but very welcome. I hoped this would give me even sound and a shot at recording a good mix coming out of the P.A. system.

When I started shooting, I noticed the stage speaker in front of me wasn't even on (or maybe they were, but very faint). While positioning my camera on the subjects, I kept trying to focus on any sound coming from the speaker in front of me. I honestly think the sound person didn't turn them on!

I could be wrong but when I compared my sound from this and the other acts recorded, I got the best vocals from my Menzingers set because they were loud (and I could hear the stage monitors in use). Touché Amoré's had the same issue as the Screaming Females in that I got the bleed over from the hanging speakers. Ugh...

Nothing I can do about it despite getting what I thought were great footage. Anyhoo, at least enjoy the video for the opportunity to check out Marissa's guitar playing!

My set-up for this show was my iPhone in a SmallRig cage, Shure MV88+ connected to one of the cold shoe mounts and the MoviePro app. And then I velcroed my MagSafe charger to the backside of my phone in order to feed me enough juice to record three sets in a row. When I left the venue, I still had over 80% battery power left.
