RAF Skellingthorpe just outside of Lincoln opened in No. 5 Group Bomber Command in November 1941 and finally closed for good in 1952 and is now buried under the Birchwood Estate with very little visible remains left
A total of 208 bombers failed to return or were lost in UK crashes during the operations flown from Skellingthorpe, this comprised 15 Hampdens, 6 Manchesters and 187 Lancasters
