Charles Callahan gehört mit über 300 gedruckten Werken für Orgel, Klavier, Chor, Solostimme, Kammerensemble und Orchester zu den produktivsten amerikanischen Komponisten der Gegenwart. Callahan wurde 1951 in Cambridge MA geboren und ist Absolvent des Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia und der Catholic University of America, Washington DC. Er studierte außerdem bei Flor Peeters in Mechelen, Belgien und bei Daniel Roth in Paris. Als Dozent unterrichtete er an der Baylor University (Waco TX), am Middlebury College (Middlebury VT, an der Catholic University (Washington DC), am Rollins College (Winter Park FL) und war Organist und Musikdirektor an verschiedenen Kirchen in Philadelphia, Washington, DC und New York City. Zahlreiche Konzerttourneen führten ihn durch Amerika und Europa. Derzeit lebt er in Vermont und ist Direktor des Vermont Conservatory of Music in Orwell VT.

„Lasst uns erfreuen herzlich sehr“ ist ein Kirchenlied, das 1623 in Deutschland entstand und auch in englischsprachigen Ländern sehr populär wurde, nachdem es 1906 im „English Hymnal“ in einer Version mit neuen Texten veröffentlicht wurde. Mit seiner triumphalen Melodie und den wiederholten „Halleluja“-Phrasen verbreitete sich das Lied vor allem in der Osterzeit und bei anderen festlichen Anlässen weltweit, insbesondere mit den englischen Texten „Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones“ und „All Creatures of Our God and King“.

Die Melodie erschien zum ersten Mal in Deutschland im Gesangbuch „Auserlesene katholische geistliche Kirchengesänge“ von 1623 während der Gegenreformation und des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. Das Gesangbuch wurde von Friedrich Spee herausgegeben, einem einflussreichen Jesuitenpriester, der oft als Komponist und ursprünglicher Textdichter des Liedes bezeichnet wird. In seiner originalen Form steht das Lied heute im deutschsprachigen katholischen Gesangbuch „Gotteslob“ (mit leicht modernisiertem Text) sowie auch im „Evangelischen Gesangbuch“ (Nr. 514) mit einer Übersetzung von Karl Budde (1929) von Drapers „All Creatures“. Seit den frühen 1900er Jahren entstanden außerdem verschiedene Versionen der Melodie für viele Konfessionen, Sprachen und Liederbücher weltweit.

Charles Callahan is among today’s most prolific of American composers, with over 300 works in print for organ, piano, chorus, solo voice, chamber ensemble and orchestra. Most of his works are published in the USA. Born in 1951 in Cambridge MA, he is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Catholic University of America, Washington DC. He took additional study with Flor Peeters in Mechelen, Belgium, and with Daniel Roth in Paris, France. Dr. Callahan has taught at Baylor University, Middlebury College, Catholic University and Rollins College and has served as organist and music director for churches in Philadelphia, Washington DC and New York City. As a concert organist, he has made recordings on new and historic instrument and performed recital tours through America and Europe.

"Lasst uns erfreuen herzlich sehr" (Let us rejoice most heartily) is a hymn tune that originated from Germany in 1623, and which found widespread popularity after “The English Hymnal“ published a 1906 version with new lyrics. The triumphant melody and repeated "Alleluia" phrases have supported the tune's widespread usage during the Easter season and other festive occasions, especially with the English texts "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones" and "All Creatures of Our God and King". The tune's first known appearance was in the 1623 hymnal “Auserlesene Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesänge (Selected Catholic Spiritual Church-Songs) during the Counter-Reformation and the Thirty Years' War. The original 1623 hymnal was edited by Friedrich Spee, an influential Jesuit priest, who is often credited as the hymn's composer and original lyricist.
The original hymn still appears in the main German-language Catholic hymnal “Gotteslob“, with slightly modernized text, and the tune as well in the Protestant “Evangelisches Gesangbuch“
(No. 514). Especially since the early 1900s, versions of the tune have been used for many denominations, languages, and hymn texts worldwide.
