Alex Pereira grew up in poverty in a Brazilian favela. He dropped out of school as a child to work, first as a bricklayer's assistant and later at a tire shop. At the tire shop, influenced by his coworkers, he developed a serious drinking problem by his teenage years.
In 2009, at age 22, he began training in kickboxing as a way to fight his addiction. His coach, recognizing his talent and indigenous heritage, gave him the nickname "Poatan"—which means "Hands of Stone" in an old indigenous language. This marked a spiritual rebirth and the beginning of his legendary career.
