Target Audience
This activity is targeted toward physicians, residents/fellows, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurses, students and
other health clinicians in the practice of pediatrics, neurology, neonatology, pediatric neurosurgery and family medicine.

Statement of Need
After attending this program, providers will be aware of current best practices in the diagnosis and treatment of
neurologic disorders in newborns, specifically neonatal neurologic exam, seizures, hydrocephalus, hypotonia, cerebral
palsy, neuroimaging and neuroprotection. Additionally, providers will have an understanding of fetal recognition of
congenital malformations of the nervous system.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
1) Define NE vs HIE.
2) Discuss the HIE evaluation – History and exam (Modified Sarnat Scoring).
3) Discuss the pathophysiology of HIE.
4) Identify therapeutic hypothermia-trials and clinical use.
5) Discuss seizures in HIE.
6) Discuss MRI brain in HIE.
