20 Newcastle pub signs, how many do you know?

Pub signs are perhaps an art form that isn’t always appreciated.

Historically, pub signs were first introduced by the Romans, so I suppose they form one of the many answers to the question: "What did the Romans do for us?"

In this case, they gave us the pub sign. Roman places for drinking wine were named Tabernae and to advertise their presence they would hang vine leaves outside of the premises.

The early pub signs in Britain used a similar theme - with the vine leaves being substituted by a bush.
