Trevor Philpott visits the United States of America, the ultimate consumer society, where everything is designed to be used, thrown away and replaced in a short space of time. While this ensures a constant supply of new customers for the likes of the consumer electronics and automobile industries, it also leads to enormous waste disposal problems.
Trevor investigates how Americans are persuaded to throw away perfectly serviceable goods after a few years, and what becomes of these briefly cherished items when they are discarded. Is the trade it in, throw it away culture sustainable in the long term?
