Israel Perfected
The portrayal of believers collectively in Revelation 12 as the woman/woman’s seed, patterned on the history of Israel, is not the only passage in that book pertaining to Israel’s identity in prophecy. In Revelation 7, the servants of God are pictured in glory as twelve tribes of Israel, each with twelve thousand members. That scene is immediately followed by a crowd of indeterminate number out of all peoples and languages. The descriptions of the one hundred forty-four thousand and the unnumbered crowd as being sealed, cleansed by the Lamb’s blood, shepherded by the Lamb, etc., are applied to all believers elsewhere in the New Testament. The two groups represent in symbolic form Paul’s description of saved persons as consisting of “the Jew first, and then the Greek (Gentile)” (Rom 1:16; 2:10; 3:29). Turning from Revelation to the book of Hebrews, we find that in chapter 11, verses 8-16, that the land inheritance promised to the offspring of patriarchs always stood for something greater than a geographic area in the Middle East.
