Sterilizer Features and Operation
Before you begin operating your autoclave, it's essential to become familiar with the location and function of the major components and controls for your model and the types of cycles your sterilizer is configured to run.

This autoclave is available in two different sizes. A 16 by 16-inch chamber accommodates up to two 25-pound sets or four fabric packs, and a 20 by 20-inch chamber accommodates up to three 25-pound sets or six fabric packs.

The front side on all models houses the chamber door, control panel, pressure gauges or displays, printer, and sterilizer power key.

Pre-programmed settings exist for several common load types, as well as leak tests, and air removal tests that are recommended daily. Tests such as the dart test or Bowie Dick are designed to document the removal of residual air from a sample challenge load. Run a dart cycle daily before processing loads in a sterilizer equipped with pre-vacuum cycles.

The AMSCO 400 Series Small Sterilizer is programmed with one or more cycles intended to process items for immediate use. Immediate use is the shortest possible time between a sterilized item's removal from the sterilizer and its clean transfer to a sterile field. A sterile item intended for immediate use must not be stored and cannot be held for use in a future case. The Pre-Vacuum Immediate Use Cycle is the preferred immediate-use cycle to use.

If you need to abort a cycle, use the touch screen to press the abort button. After confirmation, the cycle abort sound will alarm, and the screen will display the status of the abort cycle.

How To Operate The Sterilizer
Before operating, you’ll need to perform some preliminary tests. First, check that the drain strainer inside the chamber is clean, and in place. Also, make sure the chamber interior is clean and free of debris. If it’s the first cycle of the day, you may need to run a warm-up cycle and a DART or Bowie-Dick test before processing a load. Refer to your operator manual for complete information.

Use a loading car and transfer carriage to load the sterilizer, and sterility assurance and monitoring products should be used per facility policy. Use the touchscreen display to initiate the appropriate cycle for your load.

Once a cycle is completed, the cycle complete alarm will sound, and the display screen will show cycle completion. All parameters of the cycle are listed on the cycle tape.

Routine Care and Maintenance
Routing Testing will include a Bowie-Dick Test, which should be run daily after a warm-up cycle is complete. A vacuum leak test should be run weekly. Always follow facility policies and procedures for routine testing.

In addition to testing, there are a few routine maintenance tasks that should be completed including cleaning the chamber drain strainer, flushing the chamber drain, and replacing the printer paper and ink cartridge.
