Athens is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with human presence dating back over 5,000 years. It rose as the heart of classical Greece during the 5th century BC, shaping Western civilization profoundly.

The city nurtured the birth of democracy, philosophy, and literature. Great minds like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle lived and taught here. Their legacy continues to influence global ideas, education, and governance systems.

After enduring Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule for centuries, Athens was proclaimed the capital of modern Greece in 1834, after gaining independence in 1821. The monarchy later ended with the 1974 establishment of the republic.

Today, Athens is a bustling metropolis of over 3 million people. It blends rich ancient heritage with modern energy, serving as Greece’s political, financial, and educational core, with a strong presence in southeastern Europe.

Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and again in 2004. These milestones improved its global status, transport systems, airport, and city infrastructure, bringing lasting benefits for residents and international guests.

Although challenged by the 2010s financial crisis, Athens has shown resilience. It thrives through art, academia, media, and tourism, offering a Mediterranean lifestyle that draws millions annually to its vibrant and evolving culture.
