Moisture, or water vapor in air, that is concentrated in a narrow band more than several hundred miles wide, and extends across oceans or continents for sometimes thousands of miles, is known as an atmospheric river. Over the Pacific ocean, atmospheric rivers are frequent in winter. They are important because they deliver large amounts of rain and snow to land which can benefit agriculture and water resources They may also overwhelm communities when they stall, resulting in flooding of rivers, lakes, and streets. Landslides and mudslides may happen in mountainous areas. Heavy precipitation from atmospheric rivers often comes along with a low-pressure storm system, sometimes called a cyclone, which can generate damaging wind equal to that of a tropical storm or a hurricane.
