Jiaodong dagu 胶东大鼓 narrative singing from Shandong 山东, eastern China

A performance of Jiaodong dagu (胶东大鼓), a genre of traditional accompanied narrative singing (Chinese: shuochang, 说唱) from the coastal counties of the Shandong Peninsula (Chinese: Shandong Bandao, 山东半岛), also known as the Jiaodong Peninsula (Chinese: Jiaodong Bandao, 胶东半岛), located in eastern Shandong province, eastern China. Dating to the Jiaqing period (1796-1820) of the Qing Dynasty, Jiaodong dagu has a history of more than 250 years, and was traditionally performed by blind musicians. Despite strong support from the Chinese government, this art form is considered endangered, primarily due to the lack of inheritors.

The story being performed here is entitled "Fu Zi Qin Te"《父子擒特》(Father and Son Catch Spies).

In 2006 the tradition of Jiaodong dagu (胶东大鼓), centering on Yantai (烟台市), Shandong province, eastern China, was included in the First Batch of 518 traditions inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部). The sub-agencies responsible for maintaining these lists, both under the aegis of the aforementioned ministry, are the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage (文化部非物质文化遗产司) and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center (中国非物质文化遗产保护中心, CICHPC).

Additionally, in 2006 the tradition of Jiaodong dagu (胶东大鼓), centering on Yantai and Qingdao, eastern Shandong province, eastern China, was included in the First Batch of the Shandong Province Province-Level List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (山东省第一批省级非物质文化遗产名录).

In November 2019, the Qingdao Municipality Song and Dance Theater Co., Ltd. (青岛市歌舞剧院有限公司) and the Yantai Municipality Cultural Center (烟台市文化馆) qualified as official Protection Units for Jiaodong dagu, part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's List of Protection Units for Representative Projects of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
