Timișoara (Latin Timisvaria; Hungarian Temesvár; German Temeschwar, alternatively Temeschburg or Temeswar; Serbian Темишвар, Latin: Temišvar; Turkish Temeșvar) is the municipality of Timiș County, Banat, Romania. It is located in western Romania, close to the borders with Hungary and Serbia, on the banks of the river Bega.

The name of the locality comes from that of the Timiș River, combined with the Hungarian noun vár, “fortress”, meaning the Timiș Fortress. Located on the river Bega, Timișoara is the largest and most important city in the historical region of Banat. From 1848 to 1860 it was the capital of Serbian Vojvodina and Timisoara Banat. After the First World War, Timișoara became part of Romania. In 1989, the city was the focus of the Romanian Revolution, which removed the communist regime from power.
In 2011, Timișoara had 319,279 inhabitants and was the third largest city in Romania, being among the few cities that recorded an increase in the number recorded in the 2002 census. The metropolitan area of ​​Timișoara has a population of 468,162 people, while the population of the functional urban area (ZUF) has 508,037 inhabitants.

The resorts Buziaș and Băile Călacea, located at a distance of 30 and 27 km from the city, respectively, are mentioned since Roman times for the healing properties of thermo-mineral waters in the area; and the Recaș and Silagiu wine regions are recognized internally and internationally for the wines produced here.

Timisoara is an important industrial, commercial, medical, cultural and university center for Romania. It hosts the headquarters of many of the largest domestic companies: Carpatair; Life Care retailer; IT&C company ETA2U; ELBA lighting manufacturer; Azur paint manufacturer; Guban footwear company; Timișorean brewery; as well as the largest meat processing plant in south-eastern Europe, Comtim.
Timisoara is the largest academic center in the DKMT Euroregion, gathering approx. 50,000 students in four public universities: Western University; Polytechnic University; "Victor Babeș" University of Medicine and Pharmacy; Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, and three private ones: Tibiscus University; Dimitrie Cantemir University and Ioan Slavici University.

Emblematic buildings for the city are the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral and the Romanian National Opera in Victoriei Square, respectively the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Serbian Vicariate and the Brück House in Unirii Square. Tourist attractions include Huniade Castle, Theresia Bastion, Art Museum and Banat Village Museum.

Timisoara will be the European Capital of Culture in 2023.
