Fellow EM docs, we know you rely on CTs daily for rapid, accurate diagnoses, often saving lives in the process. Mike and Sanjay look at the details of a new JAMA Internal Medicine study that estimates ~103,000 future cancers from the CT’s ordered in 2023 alone, making up 5% of new diagnoses. This is a modeling estimate, likely an upper limit, and importantly, it shouldn't stop us from getting a medically necessary scan for that intracranial bleed today. The critical takeaway: be mindful, ensure medical necessity, explore alternatives (US/MRI) when appropriate, and advocate for optimized protocols.
Balance is key in the ED. You can hear the entire segment FREE on the EM:RAP app, so download it today so you don't miss a thing. https://www.emrap.org/episode/ema2025...
