KK Saman and Anil Pannila examine, from an evolutionary perspective, how Sri Lankans have transitioned from villagers to citizens. In this context, they review how the individualistic social structures of Western societies and the collectivist social structures of Eastern and Southern societies originated, as well as how these structures evolved over time.
Accordingly, they argue that the modern concept of citizenship often clashes with the still strongly operating “village mentality” prevalent in Sri Lankan society. Using an evolutionary psychological framework, they further explain how this mismatch influences key domains such as politics, economic behavior, and social trust.
