Welcome to this insightful Research Through People podcast about Unlocking the Power of our Past. Director George English dives deep into the critical role that people play in the world of research, with Jon Herd. This insightful journey through the rich history and intertwined cultures of England and Scotland, includes personal stories and genealogical connections from Jon’s ancestors.
Discover the fascinating story of the MacMillan family, who moved from Fort William to Lanarkshire to Rothesay, and then to Govan in the 1880s. Jon’s great-grandfather John MacMillan, a skilled ship plater, settled in Helen Street in the 1890s, alongside his wife Maggie's parents. The MacMillans moved to London, where Jon’s mother Jennie was born, but they were bombed out of their house. They moved to Glasgow, but their house there was bombed in the Clydebank blitz!
On the other side of the family tree, the Oakley lineage was rooted in London's vibrant East End. The Oakleys lived on St Stephens Road for over 50 years. Son Alfred Oakley, who attended Atley Road School, signed up for the Northumberland Fusiliers, lying about his age, and saying that he was 19, not 16. Alfred's service took him to France and Salonica.
This episode offers a compelling glimpse into the lives of Jon Herd's ancestors, highlighting the migration, and everyday experiences that shaped their family history. Whether you're a history buff or interested in genealogy, this episode provides valuable insights into the social and historical contexts of the times they lived in.
