Passo Torri di Fraele, Sondrio, Lombardy, Italy - by motorcycle and drone

The Passo di Fraele (1,955 meters) connected the southern Valdidentro in Italy with the Oberalp Valley in Switzerland. It had been in use since the 15th century and was of some importance for Alpine trade at that time. To control the pass, two watchtowers were built above the steep section leading to Valdidentro, which protected the Passo Torri di Fraele (1,941 meters).

However, due to the nearby Stelvio Pass and Umbrail Pass, the Passo di Fraele lost its importance as early as the 18th century.

It was not until 1926, when an access road was needed for the construction of the Lago di Cancano and Lago di San Giacomo reservoirs and the hydroelectric power station, that a pass road suitable for road vehicles was built. The road is paved until just beyond the Torri di Fraele, is about 9 km long, has 17 hairpin bends and climbs about 600 meters in altitude. The access road ends as a dirt road at the reservoirs as a dead end in the high valley of Livigno; there are no plans to further expand the old pass roads.

The pass road to Passo Torri di Fraele is easy to drive on overall. There is currently a toll of €5 to pay. Driving on the gravel road past the reservoirs further north is prohibited in July and August.

The road is located in the Italian province of Sondrio in the Lombardy region.
