“We couldn't leave! 🐚 The Magic of 80 Mile Beach, WA” - Ep 127

G'day everyone! Welcome back to the channel. This week, we’ve made it to one of the most iconic stretches of coastline in Western Australia: 80 Mile Beach.

We originally only planned to stay for three days, but the magic of this place got to us. Between the endless white sand, the incredible shells, and those famous WA sunsets, we couldn't bring ourselves to leave and ended up staying for six! If you're looking for a spot to truly "unplug" and embrace the slow pace of the North West, this is it.

🏝️ About 80 Mile Beach

Located halfway between Port Hedland and Broome, 80 Mile Beach is actually 220km long (approx. 137 miles). It’s a massive marine park and a RAMSAR-listed wetland of international importance.

History: The area is the traditional country of the Nyangumarta, Karajarri, and Ngarla people, who have a deep spiritual connection to this "saltwater country." In Karajarri, the beach is called Wender, meaning "creaking noise"—a nod to the sound of the sand under your feet.

Fun Fact: It was originally called "90 Mile Beach" but was renamed in 1946 to avoid confusion with a beach of the same name in Victoria.

🎣 Things to Do

Fishing: This is an angler's paradise. People come from all over for the Threadfin Salmon, Blue Nose Salmon, and Mulloway.

Shell Collecting: Famous for having some of the best beachcombing in Australia. The shells here are huge and incredibly diverse.

Sunset Views: There is nothing quite like a 80 Mile sunset. Grab a chair, a cold drink, and head down to the sand.

Bird Watching: Over 400,000 migratory shorebirds visit here annually from as far away as the Arctic Circle!

Turtle Nesting: If you're here between October and February, you might even spot Flatback turtles nesting on the dunes.

⛺ Where We Stayed: 80 Mile Beach Caravan Park

This is the only place to stay right on the beach. It’s a literal oasis with lush green grass (a luxury in the Pilbara/Kimberley!) and plenty of shade.

Cost (Approx):

Powered Sites: ~$50–$60 per night.

Unpowered Sites: ~$40–$45 per night.

Cabins/Studios: $160–$250+ depending on the season and size. (Tip: Check for "Off-Season" specials if you're traveling between October and March!)

Facilities: Great bore water (fresh!), clean amenities, a well-stocked mini-mart (with great bread!), and even a local market on certain days during peak season.

📍 Location & Logistics

Getting There: It’s about 10km off the Great Northern Highway via a well-maintained unsealed road. Most 2WDs can make it easily, but always check conditions.

Supplies: Stock up on fuel and major groceries in Port Hedland or Broome, as the park shop is for essentials.
