The Botswana Police Service has launched a nationwide firearms amnesty campaign this September as part of African Amnesty Month, urging citizens to voluntarily surrender all unregistered or illegally held firearms and ammunition without fear of arrest or prosecution. The initiative is part of the African Union’s Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2030 campaign, aimed at reducing gun-related violence and promoting public safety. We discuss this initiative and Botswana’s commitment to continental peace and national security, and to reinforce the message that a gun-free society is a safer society.
