What you do on one platform, you should be able to do on all. Granted, when it comes to graphics design, many will usually default to MacOS. Of course that platform has a long and rich history when it comes to graphics design, with Windows jumping in later. However, why should those two platforms dominate. What if one wanted to use such tools on Linux as well. This is where Scribus and Inkscape enters the picture.
Scribus is a open-soruce desktop publishing program avaiaible on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Using Scibus, one can create professional-quality documents like newsletters, prouchures, and magazines. Scribus comes with various layout, typesetting, and prepartion capabilities features. It's able to support both bitmap and vector graphics in various file formats, along with various font types. Text can be imported from either OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft Word.
Inkscape is a vector graphics editor. What that means is that one can create vector images, a file format where the image can theoretically be resized to any resolution without any lose in quality. The Windows Meta File format, which is commonly used for clip-art, is a file format that's in a vector format. Actually, vector image editors have been explored on this channel, as Adobe Illustrator can edit vector images. Inkscape uses the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) as its primary format. As mentioned earlier, vector files are perfect for clip-art, logos, cartoons, flowcharts, diagrams, and typography. The program can wither import or export the Adobe Illustrator format, encapsulated PostScript (EPS), PDF, PostScript (PS), and PNG.
First released in 2003, being an open-source program, Inkscape has found its way across the multitude of different Linux distros, OSX, and Windows.
