SUN KISSED PRESS RELEASE
Sun Kissed was recorded at that legendary studio where the tiles still vibrate with the reverberations of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash just to name a few; Sun Studios in Memphis. Recording completely live, these session stay true to the recording techniques used by Sun Studio's founder and producer Sam Phillips in the early 1950s, utilizing vintage microphones and sonically warm analog tape. Inspiring a CD chock 'fulla lots of revved up Rockabilly n' Roots. Original ditties and heartfelt tributes to some of Mae’s muses, like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Wanda Jackson (dubbed “America’s first female rock and roll singer” who Mae met as the supporting artist for Jackson’s Sellersville Theater show.)
The new album is creatively nourished by the inspiration of that exciting flux of genres that gave birth to rock n’ roll, the fruit of three recording sessions at Sun. The first with Grammy Award winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang. April Mae & The June Bugs signature instrumentation; April Mae on lead vocals and washboard percussion with Dave 'Catfish' Fecca on cigar box guitar, along with Christopher Davis-Shannon on upright bass. The trio is expanded with some tasty drums intensifying that rockin’ back beat and sassy sizzle that was all the rage in those early days of rock and roll. Provided by very special musical guest Rockabilly Hall of Famer J.M. Van Eaton. JM has quite a history at Sun. He held the chair as the label’s ace session drummer playing on mega-hits "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and “Great Balls Of Fire” with Jerry Lee Lewis, also recording with Billy Lee Riley, and many other Sun artists.
While touring for the International Blues Challenge and the Blues Women International project The Hopson Sessions, April Mae and Catfish Dave returned to Sun Studios, joined by Eric Frey on upright bass. Frey brings the infectious jubilant and energetic rhythm style that he’s know for with the Louisiana based Red Stick Ramblers and The Revelers. Eric's played upright bass on five Grammy nominated roots releases, and the brand new Hank Williams film I Saw the Light.
In January of 2016 April Mae returned to Memphis with her trio on an International Blues Challenge southern tour with an illuminated sense of enthusiasm. Sessions resumed with Sun Studio engineer Curry Weber at the helm. The trio on this session included April Mae, 'Caftfish' Dave Fecca and B.Skwire Esquire on upright bass. The result is an album brimming with energy, not unlike the renewal of emerging from a storm into the warm glow of the sun.
