The video explores the ongoing Global power struggle between the unipolar vs. multipolar world orders, with the U.S.-centric financial system on one side and the BRICS nations on the other. Leaders from both camps, such as Kamala Harris and Vladimir Putin, have highlighted the intensifying competition for economic hegemony. Harris suggests America will retain its edge, while Putin contends that a shift towards a multipolar world order is "irreversible." This tension reflects a broader financial dominance struggle with major implications for global financial architecture.
The BRICS annual summit reinforced the group's desire to restructure the international economic system, which they believe is overly dominated by the U.S. dollar hegemony. Although BRICS currency development and a BRICS bank and currency initiative were discussed, the summit's communique was "light on concrete steps" and currently remains at the feasibility study stage. Still, the BRICS population and economy collectively represent around 50% of the global population, underscoring their potential impact on global economic dynamics. By challenging the U.S.-centric financial system and pursuing Global financial reform, BRICS aims to create a more "inclusive and just" system. An important aspect of this rivalry is currency dominance. While BRICS seeks to lessen dependence on the dollar, the U.S. dollar resilience has proven to be a significant challenge. Against the backdrop of BRICS ambitions, the dollar continues to perform well, partly because of strong U.S. economic performance and innovation. In terms of U.S. dollar vs. yuan, the dollar remains dominant, with only the South African rand showing stronger performance among BRICS currencies. The Trade-weighted exchange rate measure is applied to understand the U.S. dollar resilience in comparison with other currencies, revealing that the dollar has outpaced most, with the exception of a few high-performing currencies such as the Singapore dollar and Swiss franc.
Innovation is identified as a critical factor in the Global power struggle. The Global Innovation Index positions Switzerland, the U.S., and Singapore as top performers, while BRICS countries lag, with China leading among them. This correlation between Innovation and economic power and currency strength is evident as countries with higher innovation scores tend to have stronger currencies. However, despite lower innovation rankings, China and India still leverage significant labor force and economy advantages due to their massive populations. Another factor shaping this landscape is demographics. The BRICS population and economy enjoy the advantage of scale, yet population growth trends are uneven, with several BRICS countries, like Russia, experiencing population declines. Meanwhile, countries like Singapore and Saudi Arabia are showing positive population trends, reinforcing their economic potential. As population growth correlates with economic success, the labor force and economy become vital in the competitive positioning of nations within the global economic system. In summary, the evolving global financial architecture is marked by the financial dominance struggle between a resilient U.S. dollar hegemony and BRICS’ efforts to create a BRICS bank and currency system to reform the U.S.-centric financial system. As global economic dynamics shift, this Global power struggle underscores the importance of innovation, population trends, and currency strength in defining the world’s future economic order.
