Jane Austen's Regency Costumed Promenade 2019 in Bath

Bath, 14th September, 2019 – Hundreds of Jane Austen enthusiasts stepped back in time today during the annual Regency Costumed Promenade, the showpiece event of the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, UK. This vibrant procession, which marks the beginning of the ten-day festival, celebrates the life and works of the esteemed English novelist.

Donning empire waist gowns, bonnets, and tailcoats, participants of all ages and from various parts of the world gathered in the picturesque streets of Bath, transforming the modern-day cityscape into a scene straight out of Austen's novels. The promenade started at the iconic Royal Crescent, proceeded through the historic streets, and culminated in the lush Parade Gardens.

"This event is not just about dressing up; it’s about immersing ourselves in the social milieu that Austen depicted so vividly in her books," said Festival Director, Alison James. "It’s a tribute to her enduring appeal and a chance for fans to connect with her world and each other."

The Jane Austen Festival, now in its 19th year, attracts visitors by offering a variety of activities ranging from workshops, theatrical performances, and lectures, to dances and music recitals, all centred around the Regency era. The festival is not only a significant cultural event but also a boost for local tourism, drawing nearly 3,500 attendees last year.

One of the highlights this year is the talk by Dr. Lucy Worsley, a renowned historian, who will explore the influence of Austen’s work on contemporary literature and culture. Other activities include a Regency ball, where participants will get the chance to dance in true Austen style, and a series of walking tours that highlight places frequented by Austen during her time in Bath.
