Abstract: Those of us who love novels know that we must suspend disbelief in order to enter into a fictional world. It is the price of admission, and we often offer this generosity without even thinking about it. The Harry Potter series charts the real character development of fictional children over seven books. However, in the world outside of the author’s fictional one, real children were also developing within the context of their immersion in these books. The act of reading an engrossing novel is far more than a descent into a fictional realm. The individual and existential act of reading a novel can be one of the most powerful catalysts for the mysterious and profound development of one’s own authentic character. This presentation will try to show that it is time to return more deliberately to this kind of orientation within the classroom.
