Excerpts from Richard Strauss’ tone poem, Don Juan, are among the most fiendishly difficult and frequently requested at orchestral auditions. This is especially true for violists, who must simultaneously master the technical demands while demonstrating an understanding of the music. This can be a daunting task; however, CSO Principal Viola Teng Li believes in the power of tenacity. “Don’t give up, and don’t stress too much. Believe in the music. If it feels like you aren’t doing something well, it doesn’t mean you won’t get there – you just aren’t there yet. But you will get there!”
