I didn’t know much about Mt. Talinis prior to the actual climb, so I had no set expectations. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only is the mountain lush, it also has many different features and is actually quite challenging. The highest peak on the Cuernos de Negros — so-called because its two major peaks resemble horns when seen from a distance — sits at just below 1800 masl. But getting there requires a long crawl through verdant forests and trails that snake through waterfalls, sulfur vents, many different patches of lakes, and a community water source that’s guarded to prevent, among other things, a poisoning of the well, as it were. I climbed this mountain with my AMCI buddies, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Our food was delicious, the company enjoyable, and I was never, not once, left behind, even when my knees threatened to crumble due to the steep and “technical” descents. There’s one more mountain on Negros Island that might deserve a second glance. After all, it’s not just about Mt. Kanlaon.
