“Spending money to show people how much money you have is a fast way to go broke - and an expensive way to gain respect.”
In this video, I share 3 powerful lessons from Morgan Housel’s new book The Art of Spending Money.
💡 Lesson 1: Spending is behavioural
We don’t spend rationally - we rationalise our spending. Our habits come from lived experience, not logic.
💸 Lesson 2: Buying things doesn’t bring lasting pleasure
Attention fades fast. Respect and admiration don’t come from what you own, but who you become.
🔁 Lesson 3: Experiment with spending
Treat spending like evolution - try different things, keep what works, and cut what doesn’t. Success comes through trial and error.
As an investment researcher and actuary, I used to think finance was a science. Housel reminded me it’s also an art — and that mastering it means understanding ourselves, not just our spreadsheets.
