From Navajo composer Juantio Becenti, From Many Voices, One People is a piece based on the heroic actions of the Code Talkers who came from
various Native American nations throughout the United States. Their collective voices were utilized during the Second World War, and contributed
to ending the conflict. Many of these individuals willingly served during a time when they were actively denied their rights to vote, and yet exemplified their commitment to community and country even in the face of oppression.
Becenti, the composer of this work, stated, “The piece begins with an Intro that establishes the basic harmonic language. Much of the melodies and harmonies are built on the pentatonic scale which is used universally among Native Americans for their ceremonial and social music. The Intro moves into (A) Across Vast Waters which represents a move into the unknown. Most, if not all, of the Code Talkers would not have seen the ocean before and must have been awed by it. This movement comes to a close with thoughts about home. Across Vast Waters moves into (B) Arrival which is jovial in nature and reflects the relief of finally arriving after a long journey. This light mood is short lived however as the realities and horror of war become apparent. Arrival moves into (C) Stargazer, which is reminiscent of the quiet introspective contemplation between conflicts. I (Becenti) imagine some would have stared at the night sky in a strange land with thoughts about home. Stargazer moves into (D) Return which begins with thoughts of home and repeats the original theme with french horns from the beginning of the piece, which is now decorated and ennobled. The movement closes as it began, representing a return to home.”
