It is the least expensive of the KitchenAid mixers and is under $200 right now. Generally it retails for about $350 without any sales or coupons. Because of the holiday season, the price is the lowest I’ve seen at $189.
It comes in black and white. The unit measures 13.9 inches tall, 8.7 inches wide and 14.1 inches deep. Since it weighs 25 pounds, It’s best to find a permanent place for it on your countertop. It comes with a stainless steel 4.5 quart mixing bowl, 6 wire whip, nylon coated flat beater, nylon coated dough hook and instruction manual with a speed control guide, good tips and lots of recipes. The wire whip is for whipping cream and egg whites. The flat beater is generally what you use most - for cookie dough, cake batters, and pie crust. The dough hook is for bread and rolls. The coated dough hook and flat beater are dishwasher safe. The 6 wire whip is handwash only.
The mixer is 275 watts and has 10 speeds. Unscrew the attachment knob, remove the plate and you can attach any Kitchenaid stand mixer attachment like a food grinder, pasta roller or slicer and shredder. Slide the lever and the head tilts, slide it back to lock the head before using the mixer. There is an adjustable screw here if your beater hits the bottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl. I’ve reviewed a couple of other KitchenAid stand mixers, if you want to see those and compare, click on the links above - I’ll also leave a link at the end of this video.
This unit is defective since it won’t turn on. I will get exchange it for another one so I can continue this review.
With the new mixer as well as the defective one, the bowl has to be thoroughly washed with a stainless steel scrubbie. There was black residue on the outside and inside of the bowl. I washed the bowl three times to get the residue off.
Let’s whip 2 cups of cream. This is at a soft peak stage when you can fold this into a batter or sauce. Keep going and now we’ve reached stiff peaks. This is what you want for a filling or frosting. Don’t go past this or it’ll turn into butter unless you want to make butter. There’s no cream on the bottom of the bowl, so the whip did a good job of whipping cream. This is so much faster than whipping by hand which I’ve done right below. Whipping cream by hand is fine for a small amount of cream but not 2 cups.
Next, we’ll try the flat beater. I’ll make a cookie dough with walnuts and chocolate chips. This is 2 sticks of soft butter. Cream that on speed 2. Add sugar. That’s creamed beautifully. Add 2 eggs one at a time and vanilla. Scrape the bowl. Go to speed 4 for a few seconds. Now on stir speed, add 2 c flour with baking soda and ½ tsp salt. Go to speed 2 for a few seconds. Scrape the bowl. Add the nuts and chocolate chips - I’m using white and semi sweet chips. Stir for a few seconds. Use this dough right away or put it in the fridge and use within a few days. You can also roll it into a log and freeze it.
Now, I’ll try the dough hook and make pizza dough. Now we have pizza dough. Oil the dough on both sides and put it in a bowl. Cover and this needs to rise until doubled. It should take an hour or longer depending on how warm your house is. Afterwards you can punch the dough down and make pizza.
This classic mixer is basic but does everything you need it to. If you have a large family and need a larger bowl or if you need something very heavy duty, then choose another model. But, for most of us who bake on a smaller scale, this Classic KitchenAid mixer is a great value for under $200. If you want to buy it, I’ve put a link below. My advice, if you really want to get one, don’t wait only because I’ve never seen it at this low a price. It’s a real shame to pay more later which we have all done and regretted.
