Back gouging is the term for cutting a weld groove into the back side of a weld down to sound weld metal before welding the back side. Metal removal is accomplished with either machining, grinding, or carbon arc gouging.
An alternative is plasma gouging. A process I rarely see used and seldom automated. I do not understand why. Plasma gouging combined with robotics is amazing. Check out the video below and please comment.
