In this video, i'll show you how to upgrade a DIMM by replacing the memory Chips on a memory stick. I think this project is great if you want to start with BGA soldering, since the stakes are not very high and if everything works out, you get a lager memory stick:)
Also, it is possible to reuse parts of obsolete ECC memory and make them usable in a desktop PC.
This is part 1 and it is focused on the hardware side of this (so sourcing the replacement chips, desoldering the old ones and reballing the new chips). However, there are also changes needed to the SPD. I cover that in part 2
