Federal Way Link Opening

The Federal Way Link Extension is now open with three new stations: Kent Des Moines, Star Lake, and Federal Way Downtown! This video covers the last train to Angle Lake at Westlake Station before taking a ride on the first southbound train to traverse the entire extension (there was an earlier train that only ran between Star Lake and Federal Way Downtown) and showcasing trains at each of the new stations.

This is the first expansion of the 1 Line in South King County since the one-station extension to Angle Lake opened in 2016. Planning work for this extension was approved by voters as part of ST2 in 2008 with construction only funded as far as Star Lake. Due to budget problems following the recession, the Star Lake portion was deferred and construction was only funded as far as Kent Des Moines with an anticipated opening date of 2023. The deferred Star Lake and remainder of the extension to Federal Way Downtown was approved as part of ST3 with a new planned opening date of 2024. This was delayed to 2026 after a previously unknown liquefaction zone required the redesign of one of the elevated structures. However, progress on the fix was quick and the extension was able to open in December 2025.
