J integral is a quantity to measure the fracture energy of ductile fracture. It calculates the strain energy release rate, or work (energy) per unit fracture surface area, in a ductile material. It was firstly derived by James Rice (1963) and can be related to the crack tip opening displacement.
In this lecture, we talk about the derivation of crack tip opening displacement first. We then show one way to derive the J integral. There are some more rigorous way to derive it in the following slides.
