As a general rule, warships are supposed to be used by their country of origin. Or, alternatively, by whatever country the ship is sold on to. You don't really want an enemy getting hold of your ship and using it.
That was exactly what happened to SMS Baden, however, at the end of the Great War. This ship had seen very little in the way of service under the German flag. And none of it in active combat. To rub salt in the metaphorical wound, the crew couldn't even scuttle her completely.
Leaving the ship in a position where she could be salvaged by the British. Who promptly poked and prodded all over the battleship, learning everything they could about German shipbuilding. Before subjecting her to gunnery trials to test their own shells.
Baden would, in the end, be far more useful to her enemy than her own country.
